Germany’s largest swimming office building has been housing IBA Hamburg GmbH since February 2010. The steel module superstructure sits on a 50-metre long and 26-metre wide concrete pontoon. The modules are relatively light and can be partially removed to enable transport, even under low bridges. The IBA DOCK is on the cutting edge of climate protection: the outer walls feature 25cm thick insulation, and both solar power and the Elbe water assist in supplying the building with power. The photovoltaics system is clearly visible on the roof. The flood aspect, too, has been accounted for at the IBA DOCK: the pontoon is attached to dolphins that move up and down a vertical 3.5 metres with the daily tide.
