What a start: HFBK Hamburg graduate Nana Xu has made it straight into the Forum of the Berlinale 2025 with her graduation film "Guochang/Obsthof". In the documentary short film, she travels back to the place that her father helped build as a prisoner during the Cultural Revolution in south-west China. A film against forgetting and concealment.

As soon as the novel "Der Buchspazierer" was published, Hamburg-based Executive Producer Daniel Hartmann discovered the cinematic potential in the material and the tragic moments in the comedy. There's a lot of Hamburg in here: In June 2024, the series "Black Fruit" celebrated its world premiere at the renowned Tribeca Film Festival in New York. On 3 October, six of the eight episodes can be seen as a German premiere at Filmfest Hamburg with a four-hour mega event including Q&A. The series was filmed entirely in the Hanseatic city. Creator, showrunner, head writer and lead actor Lamin Leroy Gibba also grew up in Hamburg - and takes a look at the realities of life for black and queer people in "Black Fruit".

With "Below Deck", the two Hamburg filmmakers Martin Prinoth and Martina Mahlknecht take a look into the world of luxury cruise ships - below deck, to be precise. In an immersive 360-degree experience, viewers follow a five-person crew of low-wage Filipino workers as they recount stories from everyday life on board. The project will celebrate its world premiere at the end of August at the 81st Venice Biennale in the Venice Immersive section.
