The variety of shopping malls is part of the city centre´s character. The Hanseviertel is the largest and most characteristic mall of the 1980s. The 200 metre-long promenade with red clinker floors and a glass barrel roof, accommodates 65 shops and restaurants. The interior red-brick walls and copper beams resemble the traditional style of the local industrial buildings and warehouses.

The Hamburg Marriott Hotel is located directly in the city center, very close to the elegant shopping malls. The ground floor hosts a roomy lobby and bar.

The splendid arcades, built by Alexis de Chateauneuf in 1843, house elegant shops and gastronomy.

The Jungfernstieg alongside the Inner Alster is one of Hamburg's most famous promenades and shopping strips. At the jetty, one can go for a cruise on the Alster, take a break from shopping in the old-established Alsterpavillon or watch the artful inline skaters who practice their daring feats on stairs and open spaces.
