The rather austere but impressive theatre by the name of Neue Flora (the New Flora as against the Old Flora, a former theatre in the Sternschanze district), designed by Kleffel, Köhnholdt and Gundermann, was built between 1989 and 1990.

The former Zeise-factory in Altona for ships´ propellers has been renovated and converted. A cinema, shops, restaurants as well as offices are now part of the modern ambience of the “Zeisehallen”. The oldest building of the factory, the current “Filmhaus”, dates back to 1882. The facade with its two gables on Bergiusstraße dates from 1901. Its ornate brickwork is typical of industrial buildings of the turn of the 20th century. All parts of the factory provide evidence of their former purpose.

The district of Bahrenfeld offers a lot of industrial real estate and traffic zones but it is at the same time with about 40% green area the greenest quarter of Hamburg with lots of parks and cemeteries. More over, Bahrenfeld offers a multiplicity of historical working class houses and factory buildings. A lot of former industrial houses are being changed into living and working spaces (the most known example is the “Gaswerk”, a former gasworks).

The Altona Amtsgericht, a lower district court that has jurisdiction over minor cival and criminal cases, was built between 1873 and 1878. The round brick building is in the style of the Berlin school associated with Schinkel. It is a vivid statement of Altona"s connection with Prussia. Between 1904 and 1907 a new, Renaissance-style, stucco building with stone details was added, associated with the time of Emperor Wilhelm II rather than with the revival architecture of Hamburg-Altona. A plaque reminds us of the first people sentenced to death under the Third Reich in the wake of Altona's blood Sunday in 1932.
